Greetings fellow Weatherfun members, and welcome to your March issue of the Weatherfun newsletter. If you read my daily reports you will know that on March 1st. I welcomed everyone to the first day of spring. Ah, you say Jerry kind of pushing it a bit haw. Well, no folks. March 1st. is the metrological first day of spring. So, welcome to spring. March also came in like a lamb here at Weatherfun Headquarters, so you all know what that means. It will go out like a lion. Oh boy up here in the northeast that could spell SNOW. I hope everyone is looking forward to an early spring, and the great weather that spring can bring. Everything suddenly comes alive. Flowers start to bloom, nature wakes up, and new life emerges. in other words Jerry's kind of weather. Very shortly we will be announcing the 5th annual Weatherfun Family reunion, plans. We are currently putting the finishing touches on the announcement, and it will be on the way to you shortly. Everyone is looking forward to the 5th anniversary reunion, and the best one yet. Also those of you who get the monthly newsletter of the AAWO weather group, be sure to check out the March issue. They will be doing a special story on me, and how I became a weather nut. I am honored and thank them very much of including this story about me in their March newsletter. Also from time to time I will be sending in a weather related article to their monthly newsletter. Until next month I hope the weather is more spring like in your area than it is here in Warren. So far no real signs of spring. Also be sure to check out the reunion material and why not make plans now to attend this great event. February's Weather 1st-2nd: Strong to severe storms from eastern Texas to southern Louisiana with heavy rain and damaging winds. Tornadoes caused damage in and around New Orleans. 3rd: Severe weather in much of Florida with damaging winds, hail and heavy rain of up to 10" in some areas, which made a store roof collapse in St. Petersburg. 6th-7th: Lake Effect Snow in NE Ohio, NW Pennsylvania and western New York. Some areas in NY got 2 to 3 feet of snow. While in southern California record heat, dry air and Santa Ana winds caused several wildfires. 11th-12th: A classic Nor'ester brought heavy snow and galeforec winds from Virginia to Maine. Most places received over a foot of snow with New York City setting an all time record of 26.9" with thundersnow. 12th-14th: Very cold weather in Florida with many areas in the northern part of the state experencing overnight temperatures below freezing. 15th-17th: Very cold weather in parts of Washington and Oregon. 15th: A blizzard swept across Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska, burying some areas under more that a foot of snow. 16th: Severe storms hit the Midwest with heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and some tornadoes. Indiana was hit the hardest. 17th: A storm with a powerful Cold Front moved from the Midwest and slammed the Northeast causing power outages to over 300,000 people due to winds gusting to 77 mph. Temperatures in some parts of western New York dropped from 60 degrees to below freezing within hours. At least 4 deaths were due to the storm. Cold weather hit the West Coast with snow and some hail falling on Bay Area mountains. 18th: Freezing rain, sleet and snow were wide spread from Texas to Kentucky causing dangerous driving conditions. In parts of southern California there was pea-sized and flash flood watches. 22nd: This winter has been extremely dry in the Southwest. Phoenix has not received any precipitation since October 18, and Los Angeles has recorded less than 3" of rain this winter. 26th-28th: The West Coast hit by storms that brought heavy rain causing mudslides in parts of southern California. More than 100,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers were without power as of 11 p.m. Monday night with most of the power outages in the Bay Area, where wind gusts peaked at 98 mph at Angel Island. Flood threats in Nevada eased somewhat as the rain changed to snow in the mountains reducing the runoff.
