May's Weather- 1st: A heavy spring snowstorm dumped over a foot of snow in the Colorado mountains, parts of Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota, closing several major highway. Severe storms from Arkansas and Oklahoma up to Iowa destroyed or damaged hundreds of homes and took 7 lives with straight line winds to 80 mph and at least a dozen tornadoes. Recent heavy rains combined with melting snow caused the St. John River in Maine to crest at a new record high, forcing residents to flee to higher ground as more than 100 homes flooded.
- 2nd: Snow and high winds closed numerous highways in southern and eastern Wyoming.
- 5th: The NWS says that on the 1st, Arkansas was hit with 11 tornadoes. One of the tornadoes was an E-F3 that stayed on the ground for 45 miles. Severe weather from northeastern Texas through western Illinois brought flooding rains, damaging hail and wind and at least 4 tornadoes in Oklahoma.
- 7th: An intense, late-spring storm dumped heavy snow and rain southeastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota easing drought concerns.
- 8th: Severe weather throughout the South with heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and several tornadoes. An EF-3 touching down in Tupelo, MS and one person died in North Carolina due to a tornado.
- 10th: Severe weather in the South with numerous tornadoes that killed at least 23 people in Oklahoma, Missouri and Georgia.
- 10th-12th: Wildfires in Florida fed by high temps and very dry air destroyed or damage over 50 homes.
- 11th: It may be Spring, but parts of northern Minnesota saw snow, with Ely having the most...4 inches. A powerful storm in Delaware, Maryland and southern New Jersey dumped up to 8 inches of rain, coastal flooding and damaging winds that knocked out power to 1000's of homes.
- 13th: Another May snowstorm has dropped 7 inches in the Colorado mountains above Denver. Flooding rains from eastern most Texas across northern Louisiana and Mississippi. Some areas of Louisiana had over 10 inches of rain.
- 14th: Severe weather rolled through Central Texas bringing heavy winds and plenty of rain.
- 15th-17th: Record heat on the West Coast. 90's to 100 were common from California to Washington.
- 18th: Parts of southern Florida had a dense smoke advisory due to wildfires that have burned over 62 acres.
- 19th-20th: Two days of record heat in parts of Arizona.
- 22nd: Southern California residents were cleaning up after a day of wild weather that brought fierce thunderstorms, at least two tornadoes, hail and even snow in the nearby mountains. Tornadoes touched down in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming, damaging buildings, flipping vehicles and killing at least one person. Tornadoes that moved through western Kansas damaged several homes but no fatalities or major injuries were immediately reported.
- 23rd: At least a dozen tornadoes destroyed homes, downed trees, caused 2 deaths and injured several people across western and central Kansas.
- 24th: Up to 10 tornadoes in northern Oklahoma knocking out power and destroying several buildings.
- 25th: Another day of tornadoes from Texas to Minnesota with one person dead and 20 missing in Hugo, Minnesota, while a tornado in Iowa killed 7 people.
- 25th: Heavy rain in Kansas with some areas getting up 5.5" and tornadoes. In Kansas, for 3 out of the past 4 days there were over 80 tornadoes.
- 30th: Severe weather in Indiana with 2 tornadoes damaging several homes/buildings. A day before the official start of the Hurricane Season, Tropical Storm Arthur formed just off the coast of Belize. He had been TS Alma in the Pacific, crossed Central American and became a depression only to reform as Arthur. He moved inland dropping over 7" of rain with winds gusting to 40 mph before being downgraded to a depression. At least 4 deaths were blamed on the storm.
- 31st: With a very active month of tornadoes, the US is on a record breaking pace for the year in number of tornadoes and deaths.
