August's Weather- 1st: The worst flooding in more than 40 years has damaged hundreds of homes in Fairbanks, AK and more rain is on the way.
- 1st-5th: Record heat continued in Texas and pushed northward to Iowa. Several deaths reported in Texas due to the heat.
- TS Edouard forms in northern Gulf of Mexico.
- 4th: w tornadoes in the metro Chicago area had winds reported at 70 mph that knocked down trees and caused power failures with at least one death reported.
- 5th: TS Edouard came ashore on the upper Texas coast with winds gusting to 85 mph and rainfall totals of 3-8". Loss of power was the biggest problem.
- 6th: Homes were evacuated in central Vermont as over 5" of rain fell sending streams and rivers over their banks and washed out bridges and roads.
- 10th: Morning Lows were in the mid 30s in parts of Wisconsin and Michigan.
- 11th: Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and several waterspouts in parts of New Jersey and Long Island.
- 15th: TS Fay forms off the coast of Hispaniola.
- 15th-17th: Thunderstorms dumped 5-8 inches of rain in northern Arizona that caused flooding near the Grand Canyon. 250 people, residents and tourists had to be airlifted to escape the flooding.
- 16th-17th: TS Fay dumped up to 8 inches of rain in southern Haiti, the southern Dominican Republic, and central Cuba. The resulting flooding has probably killed at least 36 people.
- 17th: 5 weak tornadoes in New Mexico.
- 18th: After crossing western Cuba, TS Fay went across the Florida Keys dumping over 5 inches of rain in a few hours and winds gusted to 60 mph. In southern Texas up to 13 inches of rain fell closing many roads due to flooding.
- 19th: TS Fay came ashore before dawn in SW Florida at Cape Romano with heavy rain and winds of 60 mph. Fay continued very, very slowly moving NNE across Florida dumping huge amounts of rain. 6-12 inches were common in east central Florida with an unofficial report of almost 2 feet of rain.
- 20th-21st: Fay creeps across Florida, moves a little offshore and then back onshore in northern Florida dumping heavy rain and a number of tornadoes. 6-12 inches of rain were common with the Melbourne area getting 2 feet of rain.
- 22nd-23rd: A much weaken TD Fay creeps west across Florida dumping heavy rain and spinning out several tornadoes. She brief went offshore and then back onshore.
- 24th: At least 4 tornadoes just outside Denver, CO doing very little damage.
- 25th: Gustav forms a little south of Hatti and quickly becomes a hurricane.
- 26th:-27th: The remnants of Fay continued to dropped heavy rain and tornadoes throughout the Southeast. While Gustav batters Hatti & Dominican Republic with at least 22 deaths.
- 28th-29th: Gustav passes Jamica with 70 mph winds and heavy rains that caused extensive flooding, landslides and power outages.
- 29th: Parts of California had temperatures over 100 degrees. Gustav goes to a Cat 1 striking the Cayman Islands.
- 30th: Gustav crosses western Cuba as a low Cat 4 and then weakens to a Cat 3 as he entered the Gulf of Mexico.
- 31st: Cat 3 Gustav weakens to a Cat 2 as he approaches Louisiana.
